About Karen:

I am currently a senior at Tufts University, where I am a French and Political Science major. I’ve taught and tutored from five year olds to college students to retired professionals, all who have come from a variety of cultures and language backgrounds. I am available to tutor for all levels of French and English.

As a Writing Fellow at Tufts, I edit and help students become better writers in one-on-one sessions with them about their papers. Many of my students are not native English speakers, and I’ve learned how best to convey idiosyncratic English rules of grammar and style so non-native speakers can follow along. In each writing session, I make a special effort to tailor my advice to each individual student, and I emphasize their concerns and questions as well as the suggestions I have for them.

As a former camp counselor in Ukraine, I taught an English language class; the students ranged from near-fluent to newcomers. I have also conducted an English language class for retired professionals in French, where I focused on vocabulary and advanced conversation skills.

As a French major, I have also tutored French, and I would be happy to teach grammar or vocabulary, or serve as a language partner for someone who wants to maintain their skills.

At Candlewick Press, a major children’s book publisher, my supervisors counted on me to edit manuscripts and catch typos and errors, and I became adept at explaining why one phrase sounded better than another. I am passionate about the English language, and writing skills are important to me. I can help with style and content as well as reading comprehension and grammar.
